I am becoming increasingly aware of how many sectoral interests make statements, especially in the various media, that would give the impression that they have the interests of the general population foremost in their minds. This is of course rubbish. Just watch the various Chief Economists trying to talk us into buying houses by telling us the market has already bottomed out. Business people speak in their own self interests as do politicians and priests. This is natural I suppose. When I hold forth in this forum, I am putting forward a case for what I believe to be in humanities best interest (dodgy at best) but a Vincent Browne opinion piece in today’s IT gives a timely warning of how the media can become complicit in supporting the vested interests of sectoral groups.
